St Mary's CofE Primary School - 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...Love your neighbour as yourself.' Matthew 22 v37-40

St Mary's CofE Primary School

We love. We learn. We flourish.

Year 1 - How can we protect Eggbert?

Our task was to use a variety of materials to build a protective capsule to protect an egg named "Eggbert". Our capsules (with Eggbert inside) were then dropped from a considerable height.

We put our science heads on and carefully thought about which materials would be best and why. We learnt about gravity, designed our capsules, made predictions, improved our designs and finally tested if Eggbert would survive the drop!

Our designs included materials such as bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, rubber bands, cotton balls, plastic bags for parachutes and we even had a design that incorporated an umbrella!

We had a high success rate with 11/15 surviving the drop. We think this was because we used things like plastic bag parachutes to increase air resistance which slowed down the speed at which the capsule hit the floor. We also cushioned our designs with lots of soft materials

We think that some of our eggs didn't survive because there wasn't enough cushioning around Eggbert to survive the impact of the drop. We would improve these designs next time by using more soft materials to absorb the shock of hitting the hard floor.

We also learnt that sometimes things go wrong in science and things don't always work the first time around. We also learnt that this is part of being a scientist or an engineer and we can find out why and then improve our designs. We can try and try again!
