National School Sports Week 2025

Monday 16th June
The week started with an assembly from Mrs Quinn. The children were introduced to the theme for Sports Week which is ‘Always Active’.
The children got to see a timetable of the activities for the week and the school games values.
Staff and pupils then looked at how they could ‘Move their moniker’. This involved coming up with an active movement for each letter of their name.
We tried it for St Mary’s. S for Spin, T for touching toes, M for marching, A for arm circles, R for running, Y for yoga and S for squats!

We spent the rest of the day competing in traditional sports day races: egg and spoon, running, hurdles, obstacle and sack.

Wednesday 18th June

We were visited by Martha and Lewis from ET7.  They led an assembly about girls football and how they are working with Ella Toone to raise the profile of females in the game.

Pupils and staff had a great time actively answering quiz questions and finding out about the work of ET7.

Girls from Years 1,2,3 and 4 then took part in sessions that developed their football skills.

In the afternoon, all pupils from Years 1-5 took part in a football tournament against their classmates.  It was fantastic to see them working together and encouraging each other.

Thursday 19th June

Kennedy's Performing Arts led dance parties for our active focus today.  Each Key Stage took part and there were flashing lights, games, group dances and dance offs! We had a great time!

Friday 20th June

The day started with our Run for the Red Cross.

Nursery and Reception completed their run in the playground.  Years 1-6 walked over to Lees Park and then ran or walked a lap of the field.  Year 6 did a fabulous job of marshalling and cheered each class on along the way.  So far, we have raised over £400.  Thank you to everyone for donating.

The day ended with our annual STAFF SPORTS.  It was a great opportunity for staff to get their active minutes in and for the children to cheer them on.

There were a few new events including 'Party Ring Relay' and 'Space Hopper Dash' as well as the old favourites of 'Danger Catch', 'Sticky Surprise' and 'Spider Run'.

Monday 23d June

We continued the ‘Always Active’ theme into a second week with a visit from Skip2BFit. John led sessions teaching us how we can skip to be physically fit but also build resilience and perseverance. Each child took part in a 2minute skipping challenge with special counting rope. They then completed it again to try and beat their score. We will be carrying this challenge into the next academic year with a six week programme supported by our play leaders and motivational messages and music recordings from John.
Our top scoring pupil was Chloe and our top scoring teacher was Mrs Leitch. They went head to head and Chloe won!
