St Mary's CofE Primary School - 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...Love your neighbour as yourself.' Matthew 22 v37-40

St Mary's CofE Primary School

We love. We learn. We flourish.

Year 5

In Year 5, our focus person was Harriet Tubman.

Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland, which is in the United States of America, in 1822.  She was born into slavery but escaped by fleeing to Philadelphia.

She returned and helped to free more slaves.

Harriet had many roles during her life including a nurse, spy, writer and social activist.

She died on the 10th March, 1913 at the age of 91.

We decided to focus on Harriet Tubman as she was born into slavery.  This links to our Music lessons where we have been learning to play the 12 bar blues.  Blues music was first created by African America slaves who used it to express their feelings of worry, sorrow and fear.

As Harriet was born in the United States of America, this also links to our Geography work on the continent of North America.

On Monday, we researched the life of Harriet and created posters displaying facts from her life.

On Tuesday, we used the Blues scale to create our own 4 bar composition.

The author Sean Perkins led a session in our class on Wednesday. We focused on pencil case personification. We brought stationary items to life.

On Thursday, we created representations of Harriet Tubman on the American 20$ bill using mixed media.

On Friday, Year 6 read us a chapter from ‘The boy at the back of the class’.
They acted it out and made props to bring the story to life.

Here are some of the fantastic costumes that we wore on Friday.
