St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
In the Autumn term we will work with the children to learn their level 2 sounds, please see the sound mat below. They will be exposed to simple words that use familiar sounds and will learn the blending and segmenting skills used to read and write fluently.
In the Spring term we will progress to learning the level 3 sounds. They will be used to support reading and writing CVC words and simples phrases. Attached is the sound mat for your information.
In the Summer term we will be learning about adjacent consonants, polysyllabic words and CVC, CVVC words in level 4. I have attached a list of some examples of words that the children should be able to read and write using their phonic knowledge.
With all levels please practice and support your child by encouraging them to read and write at home for pleasure. Even writing their name on their creations or labeling pictures with simple words or phrases will support their development in reading and writing.
By the end of Reception our children need to know the following high frequency words, some of which can not be sounded out. The children know these words as 'tricky words'. I have added the tricky word flash cards to use with your children. They love playing games with them such as sound splat, hide and seek sounds and speedy sounds.
