St Mary's CofE Primary School

Phonics

We are now able to use our Level 2 and 3 sounds to read and write words.  We are working on our blending and segmenting as this is how we read with fluency.  In Level 4 we are working on adjacent consonants, polysyllabic words and CVC, CVVC words.  I have attached a list of some examples of words that the children should be able to read and write using their phonic knowledge.

Level 3 Sounds

Level 2 Sounds

By the end of Reception our children need to know the following high frequency words, some of which can not be sounded out.  The children know these words as 'tricky words'. I have added the tricky word flash cards to use with your children. They love playing games with them such as sound splat, hide and seek sounds and speedy sounds.

Twinkl Phonics - Segmenting Song (Level 3, Week 1)

The brilliant Level 3 Phonics Week 1 Segmenting Song is a great tool for you to help your child learn segmenting in Level 3 Phonics. Using music to present information to your child can be very effective, and that's why song animations like this one can be so handy. There are many other versions with different sounds in each.

Twinkl Phonics - Sound Blender (Level 3, Week 5)

The lovely Level 3 Week 5 Blending Song will support your child when using their phonic skills to blend. It will ensure that your child is engaged and focused, using colourful visuals and a catchy tune! The video includes lyrics too, so you can all sing along together. There are many other videos with different words to learn. Just search Robot Rick phonics on You-Tube!
