St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
We have chosen Steve Irwin, the "crocodile hunter", as our Little People, Big Dreams book as this term we are looking at animal fact files and the Oceans and Continents of the World.
Steve Irwin spent his childhood helping out on his family's wildlife refuge in Australia. He saved his first crocodile at just nine and as an adult became the leading crocodile expert. With his television shows, Steve captured the hearts of people all lover the World and inspired viewers to cherish and respect the planet.
In Year 2, we will be learning about Steve's life and achievements and focus our topic on the continent of Australia. We will be doing an art lesson drawing crocodiles and also recreating our our aboriginal artwork using dot art techniques.
We will also be watching a live stream book read by the author David O' Connell. He will be reading his book, Bugtastic facts, alongside a bug fact quiz and drawalong.
Crocodile draw along
We read our Little People, Big dreams book about Steve Irwin and watched a clip of him in his nature reserve feeding the crocodiles. The children were shocked to learn that the largest crocodile in the zoo was over 4 metres long!
We had an arty session drawing crocodiles for our art books.
Beastie Bros by David O' Connell - Bug Quiz!
Year 2 enjoyed a live stream class visit provided by Scholastics for World Book Day. The author and illustrator David O' Connell joined us to share his book, Beastie Bros, and then we had a little quiz all about bugs and insects. Then he demonstrated how he created his characters from his books.
