We love. We learn. We flourish.
Spanish Day
On Friday 22nd May, we held our annual Spanish enrichment day.
Each class focused on a different Spanish celebration or tradition. Children were invited to wear red and yellow to reflect the Spanish flag or traditional Spanish wear.
Two Spanish student teachers from Droylsden Academy delivered lessons to Years 4, 5 and 6.
Nursery and Reception - La tomatina
This is an annual tomato throwing festival held on the last Wednesday of August near Valencia. Known as the world's biggest food fight, tens of thousands of participants gather to pelt each other with overripe tomatoes for one hour.
Year 1 - Feria de Abril
This annual celebration is held in Seville. Taking place two weeks after Easter, it transforms a vast fairground into a vibrant temporary city where locals and visitors celebrate Andalusian culture with traditional flamenco dancing, food, drink, and horseback riding. The fairground is lined with marquees (casetas). Children experimented with different materials to make their own 'casetas '.
Year 2 - La Semana Santa
This is Holy Week in Spain and is always celebrated from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. There are processions through the streets with large floats carrying statues depicting Christ and Mary.
Year 4 - Las fallas
This is a festival held in Valencia from the 15th to the 19th March to welcome Spring. It features hundreds of papier-mâché sculptures (fallas), firework displays and parades. Groups of neighbours spend the year building massive, detailed statues that line the city streets.
Year 5 - Romeria del Rocio
This is a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Over 1 million Catholics travel by horse, cart and on foot to Rocio.
Our learning linked to our RE unit: What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?
In this unit, we had learnt about the Hajj, which is a pilgrimage Muslims make to Mecca.
We made posters showing similarities and differences between the two pilgrimages.
Year 6 - San Fermin
This is a famous, week long celebration held from 6th-14th July. One of the most well known features of this event is the Encierro (the morning running of the bulls). There are also huge street parties and daily parades.
