St Mary's CofE Primary School - 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...Love your neighbour as yourself.' Matthew 22 v37-40

St Mary's CofE Primary School

We love. We learn. We flourish.

Reception

Reception had a fantastic time today making our very own tomato soup as part of our learning about food and where it comes from.

We began by thinking about, “Who helps us get our food?” We talked about farmers, growers, people who transport food and those who work in shops.

We also thought about “How can we love our neighbours by being thankful for the people and the world that provide our food?” This helped us appreciate both the people involved and the wonderful world around us that allows our food to grow.

Before cooking, we wrote a list of the ingredients we needed and talked through the recipe, putting the different steps for making our soup in the correct order. Everyone then got involved, helping to add and mix our tomatoes, passata, vegetable stock, basil and garlic.

We had lots of fun using our senses, especially smelling and tasting the different ingredients. Of course, the best part was tasting the finished soup, and we all agreed it was delicious!

We were amazed to discover that some of the food we eat can travel thousands of miles before it reaches us. This reminded us of Mr Quinn’s assembly on Monday, when he talked about how we could grow some of our own food instead.

This gave Reception an idea! We have decided that we would like to grow our own tomato plant in the classroom, look after it throughout the year and hopefully have some home-grown tomatoes ready for Nursery when they join us next year.

A lovely day of cooking, talking, writing, exploring our senses and thinking about how we can care for our neighbours and our world.
