We love. We learn. We flourish.
In Year 5, we completed our Harvest Cooking Challenge on Friday 2nd October.
We began by exploring our theologically rooted vision by discussing, 'Who is our neighbour?'
We then made a list of all the people involved in getting food to us. These included farmers, vehicle drivers, shop workers and our parents.
The 'Greenhouse Effect' was then introduced to us. We learnt about the atmosphere around the Earth and how it allows us to keep warm. However, a rise in certain gases is causing the Earth to heat up and is contributing to climate change.
Our foods each have a greenhouse footprint depending on how many of these gases are produced during manufacture. Transportation, refrigeration and processing all produce these harmful gases.
We had a go at ordering the foods from those with a high footprint to those with a low footprint.
Our recipe was for oatcakes. The ingredients generally had low greenhouse footprints. We also made adaptions by adding cocoa powder, honey or bananas.
Bananas
These were fair trade. This ensures that farmers are paid a fair wage for the products they produce.
Cocoa Powder
The company that makes this product are part of the Rainforest Alliance. They protect nature, improve the livelihoods of farmers and promote sustainable forestry.
Honey
This was made locally ensuring that the greenhouse footprint is low.
Through this activity, we were able to explore how our food choices affect 'our neighbours'. We can make choices that have a more positive impact on our environment for future generations as well as the farmers and families of today.
