🖤💛❤️ Black History Month – Honouring Our Communities ❤️💛🖤

We have been learning all about Black History Month! During our whole-school assembly, Mrs Doherty explained the importance of Black History Month and introduced this year’s theme: “Honouring Our Communities.” 🌍

We also explored the important role of local community heroes, including doctors, nurses and other professionals who work hard to support others and help shape our communities. We discussed how these people make a positive difference to our lives and why their contributions deserve to be celebrated. ❤️

Back in the dojo, we explored our own PowerPoint and learned about two inspirational Black icons: Garrett Morgan, the inventor, and Tessa Sanderson, the Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower! 🌟

After our PowerPoint, we worked together to create a fact file, finding out who they were, what made Tessa’s achievements so special and what her sporting “superpower” was. We also learned about Garrett Morgan’s work as an inventor and his traffic signal invention. The children enjoyed watching clips of Tessa competing in the Olympics and seeing her incredible throwing skills in action! 🏅

We then brought our learning to life through some exciting, hands-on activities. The children got creative by making their own traffic lights inspired by Garrett Morgan’s invention, which we then went outside to view from our school gates. 🚦

We also channelled our inner athletes and pretended to be javelin throwers just like Tessa! The children practised their throwing skills by aiming beanbags into hoops. 🎯

We had lots of fun celebrating inspirational people, discovering the achievements of Black historical figures and recognising the everyday heroes who help make our communities special! 🖤🙌
