Black History Month - October 2024

BLACK HISTORY MONTH - October 2024

Black history month celebrates those individuals throughout history and highlights their important roles in shaping society and inspiring our younger generations. This month at St Mary's, we have recognised the importance of celebrating these key people and sharing the richness of cultures and history in our community.

Over the last few weeks, classes have explored a variety of significant people and artists from Black History:

In Year 2 we have focused on the artist Alma Thomas, recreating her beautiful patterned, abstract art using paint.

In Nursery and Reception we have looked at Chris Ofili, we looked at his use of colour and pattern to represent exotic plants and we responded to his work in a very unique way.

In Year 3 we have learned about Nicola Adams (OBE), a British Olympic boxer and advocate for those with ADHD.

Year 2

Year 2 focused on the American artist, Alma Thomas and her wonderful abstract artwork representing nature.

Alma Thomas was an art teacher in Washington D.C who didn’t actually become an artist until she retired. Her first exhibition was at the age of 75!

She was inspired by taking walks in her home city and seeing the colours of flowers at different times of the year.
