St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
Our school is a Voluntary Aided Church School, dating back to 1870, originally led by the Reverend Henry Price. The Church of England voluntary aided status means the school has close links with Manchester diocese and St. Mary’s Church. Several members of the school governing body are representatives of St. Mary’s and St. John’s Church. The Priest in Charge, Miss Cath Hewison, is closely involved in the life of the school. We have strong links with the Church. There is a weekly act of worship in church. There are also special services and festivals and parents are welcome to join the children in these celebrations. The school has undergone many changes.
Our school is a community where Christ is the centre. Every individual is appreciated and valued. All are encouraged to develop their full potential: spiritually, morally, intellectually and physically. The ethos of sharing, caring and friendship is fundamental to children becoming responsible citizens in God’s world.
We believe in:
Citizenship
Happiness
Responsibility
Interdependence
Self-control
Tolerance
We believe that children are the centre of the learning process and they will enjoy learning given the right conditions.
We strive to ensure our pupils will:
• Be safe
• Be healthy and happy
• Enjoy learning
• Achieve success
• Be able to contribute to their school and society
• Be prepared for a life in the 21st Century.
The education provided at St. Mary's aims to make an important contribution to the children’s academic, spiritual, moral, cultural, social and physical development. Teachers have high expectations of the children. Children’s work is regularly assessed and monitored in order to raise standards.
• To provide the children with the opportunity of growing up in a Christian community appreciating and understanding its values and worth.
• To develop an understanding of the Christian faith
• To give children a knowledge and appreciation of at least two other major world faiths in multicultural Britain.
• To heighten children’s sensitivity to the spiritual as they search for meaning and joy in life, realising that God is only a prayer away.
• To ensure children know they have a special and unique contribution to school life.
• To build up self-esteem and worth of children so they respect themselves and each other
• To maintain acceptable standards of behaviour
• To develop trust, understanding, tolerance, consideration and respect of other people in the community and their property.
• To encourage independence, self-confidence and self-reliance
• To provide a broad and balanced school curriculum
• To provide challenging learning activities differentiated to suit the age, gender, needs and ability of each child.
• To encourage an enthusiastic attitude to learning
• To give children equal opportunity of access to all aspects of school life.
• To give praise for genuine effort and hard work so children enjoy success.
• To encourage children to lead healthy lifestyles using their knowledge of the factors contributing to health and hygiene
• To provide physical exercise which will contribute to the sense of wellbeing.
• To help children work and play alongside each other through team games.
