Collective Worship

Intent

Collective Worship is at the heart of life at St Mary's CE Primary School and is central to our Christian vision of "We love. We learn. We flourish." It is a special time when our whole school community comes together to worship, reflect, celebrate and grow in faith. Through Collective Worship, we seek to deepen children's understanding of God, themselves, others and the world around them, whilst nurturing their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Our worship is rooted in the Christian faith and reflects the traditions of the Church of England. At the same time, it is inclusive, invitational and inspiring, ensuring that every member of our school community feels welcomed, respected and able to participate in a way that is meaningful to them.

Collective Worship enables children to explore Christian teachings and values through scripture, prayer, music, reflection and discussion. It provides opportunities to develop spiritually by encouraging children to think deeply about life's big questions, reflect on their own beliefs and values, recognise the importance of compassion and service, and consider how they can positively influence the lives of others.

Children are active participants in worship and are encouraged to contribute through prayer, discussion, drama, storytelling, music, leadership and reflection. Worship helps children understand how our CHRIST values of Citizenship, Happiness, Responsibility, Interdependence, Self-Control and Tolerance can be lived out each day, enabling them to flourish as compassionate and responsible members of God's world.

Implementation

Collective Worship takes place every day and forms an integral part of school life. Worship is carefully planned to reflect the Church calendar, our Christian vision, school values, current events and the needs of our school community.

Our weekly pattern of worship is:

  • Monday – Whole School Collective Worship led by Mr Quinn, introducing the weekly theme or Christian value.

  • Tuesday – Singing and Praise Worship led by Mr Newall.

  • Wednesday – Church Worship led by Rev. Cath and members of the Senior Leadership Team.

  • Thursday – Teacher-led Collective Worship, providing opportunities to revisit and deepen the week's learning within individual classes.

  • Friday – Celebration and Achievement Worship led by Mrs Quinn, celebrating pupils' achievements and recognising how they have demonstrated our CHRIST values throughout the week.

Children enter worship in a calm and respectful manner, supported by reflective music that helps prepare them for this special time together. Christian symbols, including the cross and Bible, provide a focal point for worship and remind us that Christ is at the centre of our school community.

Each act of worship follows a familiar pattern, including prayer, scripture, reflection, singing and opportunities for pupil participation. Children regularly share the School Prayer, the Lord's Prayer and other age-appropriate prayers, whilst also having opportunities to write and lead their own prayers.

Collective Worship uses a wide range of approaches, including Bible stories, drama, storytelling, music, discussion, current affairs, inspirational videos and the lives of Jesus, Christian figures and modern-day role models who demonstrate courage, compassion, justice and service. These experiences help children recognise how Christian teachings remain relevant within today's world.

At St Mary's, spirituality is intentionally nurtured through every act of worship. Children are encouraged to reflect on how each session has influenced the way they think, feel, believe and behave. Opportunities are provided for stillness, personal reflection and discussion, allowing children to explore their own spiritual journey and consider how they can live out God's love through their relationships and actions.

Pupil leadership is a significant strength of Collective Worship at St Mary's. Members of the Ethos Group work alongside Mr Quinn to help plan and lead worship, particularly during key Christian festivals and significant religious events such as Noah's Ark, Saint Valentine, Palm Sunday, Advent, Christmas and Easter. They contribute ideas, write prayers, take part in drama and storytelling, model reflection and help communicate Christian messages in engaging and meaningful ways.

As worship draws to a close, and before the final dismissal, children are invited to sign and say our school vision, "We love. We learn. We flourish." This initiative was developed by the Ethos Group to ensure that our vision is accessible to everyone and can be shared by all members of our school community. Where appropriate, pupils also use Makaton signs for our CHRIST values, reinforcing their meaning and ensuring that worship remains inclusive for every child.

Reflection continues beyond the act of worship itself. Each week, the class with responsibility for reflection, supported by members of the Ethos Group, discusses the key messages from worship and explores how these have influenced pupils' thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours. Children consider how they can apply the learning within school, at home and in the wider community.

These reflections are recorded in a shared whole-school Collective Worship Book, creating a collective record of our spiritual journey. The book includes pupils' responses, prayers, artwork and reflections, celebrating the impact of worship across the school whilst informing future planning and ensuring that pupil voice remains central to the ongoing development of Collective Worship.

We value our strong partnership with St Mary's Church, the Diocese of Manchester, families and the wider community. Clergy, governors and visitors regularly contribute to worship, enriching children's understanding of faith and strengthening the relationship between school, church and community.

Impact

The impact of Collective Worship is seen through the relationships, attitudes and behaviours demonstrated across our school community. As children grow in faith and understanding, they increasingly recognise how our Christian vision and CHRIST values influence the way they treat others, make decisions and contribute positively to the world around them.

Whilst the long-term impact of worship develops over time, pupils are given immediate opportunities to reflect on their learning through discussion, prayer and the weekly reflections recorded in our shared Collective Worship Book. These reflections enable children to express how worship has encouraged them to think, feel, believe and behave, providing valuable insight into their spiritual development and understanding.

The shared Collective Worship Book, together with pupil voice, Ethos Group feedback, governor monitoring and staff evaluations, enables leaders to continually review the effectiveness of worship. This ensures that Collective Worship remains meaningful, relevant and inspiring, helping every member of our school community to live out our vision to love, learn and flourish.
