Who are The British Red Cross?

How the British Red Cross is helping the most vulnerable people in the UK and overseas

By harnessing the power of kindness, in 2020 we will focus on three areas of crisis in the UK and overseas. Disaster response in the UK and around the world, supporting migrants and refugees at every step of their journey and filling gaps in the UK healthcare system so that more people are able to live well.

The Power of Kindness

Kindness comes in many forms. And there's something every single one of us can do to help. We believe in the power of kindness. That's why we connect those who've got kindness to share, to those who need it most, every day. Your kindness is powerful.

How did 'British Red Cross' volunteers help during the First World War?

In the First World War, British Red Cross volunteers did everything from nursing the sick to peeling potatoes, knitting socks and driving ambulances. County branches of the Red Cross had their own groups of volunteers called Voluntary Aid Detachments (often abbreviated to VAD). Voluntary Aid Detachment members themselves came to be known simply as 'VADs'.

Red Cross emblems and their purpose
