St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
This half term our topic is Traditional Tales!
We are exploring the much-loved story The Gingerbread Man, enjoying the excitement of the tale and joining in with repeated phrases like “Run, run, as fast as you can!”. Through this story, we are learning about characters, settings and simple story sequences, while building a love for traditional stories that have been shared for generations.
In Nursery, we are developing our understanding through fun, hands-on activities and imaginative play. Children have been busy baking pretend gingerbread, decorating gingerbread people, building bridges and paths for the Gingerbread Man to escape across, and practising careful cutting, mark-making and tool use. Our role-play area has been transformed into a castle to support storytelling, with children acting out stories together, taking turns and using their imaginations to bring tales to life.
In Phonics, we are learning all about rhythm and rhyme. We will be clapping syllables, tapping beats and joining in with rhyming words from stories and songs. Exploring rhyme helps children to hear patterns in language and supports early reading skills in a fun and active way.
This is a joyful and engaging topic — full of storytelling, creativity and plenty of “run, run, run” moments, with lots of fantastic learning along the way!
