St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
Nursery
We met Smartie the Penguin who was having problems with his new tablet that he received for his birthday!
However… strange things started popping up on the screen and he did not know what to do?
We helped Smartie by telling him to tell his grown up and always ask for help. We also told him not to press on anything that popped up if he didn’t know what it was as we need to keep safe.
We then went off and drew pictures of what we use our tablets for at home!
Reception
We helped Smartie the Penguin with his new tablet, he was not sure why things were going wrong so we helped him remember to - STOP, THINK, TELL SOMEONE. We sang a song and created a picture of our favourite things to do on the iPad/tablet. There was lots of wonderful and safe suggestions of games, programmes to watch and information to explore on the internet.
Year 1
During Internet Safety Week, we watched a presentation about ‘Keeping safe online.’ Once we had discussed how to keep safe, we then completed a sorting activity to demonstrate our understanding of what’s safe and what’s not safe.
All the children proved they understood the concept of online safety.
Year Four
We had a look at the pros and cons of AI.
We spoke about how AI can be used to summarise information to help us understand a complex text, we looked at how it can help us visualise new ideas and how it can help when used correctly.
We also discussed the importance of looking for clues where AI is used to create fake news.
The children then took part in a AI quiz to see if they could spot the signs where AI was used.
Year 5
On Safer Internet Day, we began with an activity called 'Pick a side', where we showed our preference for different online situations. Some of the choices we had to make were...
Watch a funny video or be in a funny video?
Meet a famous you tuber or be a famous you tuber?
Spend more time on line than you do now or less?
We then came up with things that we like about the internet and things that we would change.
Next, we looked at different scenarios where AI could be used and decided if it would be ok or not. Some of these included...
Use an AI voice assistant to tell you facts about your favourite animal.
Use AI to create a joke about one of your friends and then send it to them.
Use AI to complete a homework activity.
Ask an AI voice assistant to tell you about a new game that is about to be released.
We decided that some of the situations were ok as long as age restrictions were in place or there were strict rules around it.
Finally, we looked at lots of different events that happen in your life including starting school, starting Nursery, taking your first photo and using an online games console. We tried to put these in order of the age in which you would first encounter them. There was lots of discussion as ages varied between pupils. Some first went online or owned a phone much earlier than others.
Year Six:
During 'Safer Internet Day', Year Six spent the afternoon looked at some of the pros and cons of being online. We disucssed several different scenarios, how they made us feels and the ways in which we could safely repsond to them. The children then created some posters to warn others of the dangers. They included some top tips of what to do to stay safe online.
