St Mary's CofE Primary School
We love. We learn. We flourish.
At St Mary's, our Eco Group are true agents of change! They help to look after our school environment and care for the world around us. The group is made up of two representatives from each class, who work together to make our school a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place to learn.
The Eco Group had a brilliant time talking about how small changes can make a big difference to our world 🌍 They were especially excited to support Reception with their topic 'Our Wonderful World', sharing thoughtful ideas about how we can all help look after the planet for both humans and animals. From tackling litter, to being kind to creatures and caring for plants, the children came up with lots of inspiring and creative ideas. The Reception children loved listening to their stories and learning from the colourful, information-packed posters and it was a joy to see how proudly they engaged. It was heart-warming to watch the older children shine as positive role models and just as lovely to see the younger children enjoy learning from pupils as the teachers for a change!
Our Eco group are truly Agents of Change! We talked about what we would like to change in the world and went to visit the mural near the intervention room, which sparked so many wonderful and thoughtful ideas. We explored our journey towards achieving the Green Flag accreditation and discussed what we need to do to earn this award, including plans to introduce recycling bins following the letter sent Mr Quinn last month and even the exciting possibility of a company coming in to support us with this. The children are now creating information sheets on “How We Can Save the World” to share with Reception, linking with their topic and giving our pupils a chance to work collaboratively as eco-role models – something they are very proud of!
They are also eager to get into the garden and we have been learning about biodiversity, thinking carefully about our little friends who live there. Ideas such as bird boxes and bug hotels were suggested, showing real Courageous Advocacy as they considered how they can help their community. The children even asked about starting an after-school club, which we hope to launch when the weather improves! Finally, we discussed cutting carbon and launching a school-wide challenge to see how we can inspire our friends across the school to help reduce our carbon footprint. It’s been a truly inspiring start to their eco journey! 🌍💚
