Reading

Reading books are sent home with the children weekly and will be changed every Thursday.

The children attend our library each week and are able to choose a book, this book is to encourage the love of reading for pleasure.  Please read this to your child or allow them to use the pictures to 'tell' you the story. Asking them questions about the book once you have read will help them with their inference skills, understanding and comprehension. These books will also be changed every Thursday.

For more information about reading, please see the below document 'How to help your child to read at home'. Reading should be a positive experience, find a quiet and relaxing space, get comfortable and share a good book. In reception we LOVE books. Let them show you just how much. Let them read their levelled book as many times as you can in a week, repetition and spotting familiar words is important.  Encourage them to blend and segment words aloud and use their finger to follow the words. This is ok. Please also encourage them to use their phonic knowledge as all books should allow for them to put their new skills to the test. Please praise their hard work, sometimes words are tricky, however the more we try the more we learn.

Please send books in each week so that your child may choose a new one. Writing in the yellow reading record book allows us to see that you have read, please add any comments in the box provided.

In class we are using ICT to support our learning, one application they are enjoying using is 'Teach your Monster to Read'.  As a parent you can create a free account for your child. Click here to access the Teach your Monster to Read website.

In addition you can access a large selection of reading books on 'Oxford Owl', again this is a free resource, just register and you are away! Click here to access the Oxford Owl website.

Thank you for all your support with reading!
